My 2016 hemi is having an intermittent error code that indicates a large leak in the evap system. The check engine light will stay on for a few days and then go off. The gas cap is not loose.

Has anyone else had this problem?

Happens to mine, but it's a code that says tiny leak.

Do yourself a favour. Put a light coat of vaseline on the o-ring of the cap and see if it goes away. Sometimes even when tight it may not seal. This will do it.

P0455 Evap System

Large

Leak Detected

A loose or improperly affixed gas cap
A non-conforming gas cap (i.e. not factory/original brand)
Other leak or damaged piece in EVAP system

Remove and reinstall the gas cap, clear the codes, and drive for a day and see if the codes come back. Otherwise, replace the gas cap, and/or Inspect the EVAP system for cuts/holes in tubes/hoses (you may hear a vacuum noise or smell fuel), repair if necessary

If you are out of the bumper to bumper warranty
check around the evap canister area for a split hose

If that hose is On & Good, the 2nd place to check is shown in this video

Ramcares,

I am unable to send private messages because I have not started 50 post yet. If you send me a PM I will be able to PM you back.

I took my Ram to Mac Haik Ram here in Houston for 4 recall Items and a few other problems. They have had the truck since Tuesday and have not started working on it yet.

Several of the problems are intermittent such as the remote start failure and, Parksense error alarm.

The side mirror defrost does not work and was diagnosed by Autonation Katy as being a defective circuit board. It took several days for them to get approval from Chrysler to make the repair, and then they did not have the parts in stock. I retrieved my truck and asked them to call me when the part was in but they never called. They also did not retain any documentation about the diagnosis or factory approval so they would have to start from scratch if I came back. I will not likely return to Autonation Katy for service.

I also have some vinyl door trim coming loose and want the Daylight Running lights enabled and speedometer calibrated for the larger tires I installed.

I am hoping to get a rental car since this repair is taking so long.

How many electrical components are involved with the evap system. The dealer was unable to fix the problem so I may have to do it myself.

The fuel system is a sealed system

Fuel goes into the fuel filler neck
The fuel filler neck is sealed off one 1 end by the gas cap
The filler neck has 2 hoses attached at the bottom end, 1 hose of coarse goes to the gas tank, the other hose is the Vent hose, it goes to the top of the gas tank,
At the top of the gas tank there are 2 separate 3 or 4" round holes, one of them is the gas pump & filter. The other contains a anti tip over valve, that won't allow fuel to spill out when a vehicle is no longer upright. There are also 2 hoses, one is the vent hose & the other hose goes from the gas tank to the charcoal canister.
The charcoal canister has an inlet & outlet hose that is used for further venting.
The outlet vent hose leads up to the engine, where the fumes pass through a

Purge Solenoid

The main reason that we should never top off the fuel tank is because raw liquid fuel will enter the vent hose that leads to the evap canister & when gas enters the canister, it degrades the charcoal, which ruins the canister.

After 2 visits to the service department, they have been unable to fix my evap error code.

The first time, they just did a leak test and after finding that there were no leaks did nothing further. The second time, they replaced the evap system solenoid valve which was not the problem.

Since it is not the solenoid and there is not a leak, what else is there?

Each visit to my local dealer requires them to have the truck for 7 to 10 days.

I had a jeep that haunted me with this message,I had a oiled K and N filter and my suspicion was that the oil got on the sensor and something might have thrown it off as far as air flow, do u have an aftermarket oiled filter?

The PCM activates the EVAP Purge Solenoid to pull the Evaporative system into a vacuum to close the ESIM Switch. Once the ESIM Switch is closed, the PCM turns the Evap Purge solenoid off to seal the Evaporative System. If the ESIM Switch reopens before the calibrated amount of time, a large leak error is detected. Two Trip Fault. Three good trips to turn off the MIL.

The last thing on the fault isolation list, right after the solenoid is the ESIM switch itself. Its usually attached to the EVAP canister. Its very similar to the NVLD but doesn't have a solenoid.

Now thats assuming the dealer did a competent job with the smoke and leak tests, checking TSBs for software updates, visual inspection, solenoid replacement...

Finally tracked down my own P0456 small leak that's been plaguing me. Squirrels chewed through the hose on top of the back of the tank where it pulls out the fumes, just past the o-rings that seal the connection. Had to drop the tank to see it.

My squirrels ate several inches of the evaporator hose at top of tank.

After innumerable trips to the dealer and several perfectly good evap parts replaced, they finally determined (by process of elimination) that the valve on top of the tank that prevents fuel from leaking out in a rollover was bad. They replaced it and the problem went away. Luckily it was still under warranty, I do not recommend Chryslers service department.
